Meet your state Secretary Nik Grimm!

// March 2009

image Have you ever known someone who can make you laugh without even cracking a smile?  Well Nik Grimm, our state secretary, can do just that.  Nik is one of the more versatile people on our teams.  So much in fact that his likes include cars, motorcycles, snowboarding, skydiving, sandwiches, music, trapshooting, math, camping, and physical labor.  Nik’s dislikes are refined sugar, apathy, mold (because it kills his sandwiches), and big talk with little action.  Pretty random if you ask me.  Nik’s favorite FFA moment is when members stay after class at chapter visits just to thank him.

What to look for in the Next AgVocate

// March 2009

As we come closer to State Convention, we, the 2008-09 Washington State Officers, will be handing over this newsletter to the soon-to-be 2009-10 State Officers. So for the final issue of the AgVocate from us, we will be including the articles “Getting to know your State Vice-president and your State President” among many others!!! Remember to send in pictures and other members who you think deserve to be our final “featured member.” Look forward to that issue which will be released on the same day as the start of the 79th Washington State State Convention. Get excited, Washington, because state convention is coming fast and we are going to make some amazing memories!!!

Featured Member

// March 2009

imageThis month the “Featured Member” article is more of a “Featured Members” article. We are recognizing two individuals that hail from the Enumclaw FFA Chapter and are extremely involved in many activities. Here’s what a fellow member had to say about them:

In the Enumclaw FFA chapter there are numerous outstanding members, but two in particular come to mind! They are two of the kindest people in the world and are always there for anyone. This year, 2008-2009, will be their senior and final year of participating in the Enumclaw FFA Chapter! Everyone is going to miss them. Over their FFA career they have participated in many CDE’s. Some of which include, Prepared Public Speaking, Ag Issues, Job Interview, and many more. This year they are looking forward to participating in: Ag Issues, Prepared Public Speaking, Marketing, Job Interview, F.A.R.M, showing goats, and marketing pigs at the Spring Fair. Kaitlin Norton and Calli Campbell are both amazing young women and will be graduating this year from Enumclaw High School where they will be missed!!!!! Through FFA they have learned knowledge that will guide them through the rest of their lives!! I wish them both the best and will hopefully always stay close friends!! They are great leaders and have accomplished much through FFA!! Keep it up Kaitlin and Calli!!

Sincerely,

Taylor Harrison from the Enumclaw FFA Chapter

Upcoming Events

// March 2009

Being a State Officer, you never now where you are going to find yourself! As I write this article, I am sitting in Mr. Cool’s office preparing to listening to freshmen Greenhand members perform the FFA creed at Chelan High School, and I am reminded of the time of season we are in. CDE’s are the major contests that are held each year to help students develop leadership skills through agricultural education, and I know that many of you have been practicing for months in the hopes of winning. I encourage you all to participate in as many CDE’s as you can. As a State Officer, I wish I would have taken the time as a High School student to compete in Extemporaneous Public Speaking and Prepared Public Speaking! You are given a lot of opportunities to compete and I challenge you all to do so. These events are coming up very soon and by the time you read this article Districts will most likely be rapidly approaching, but there still are chances for you to compete in the many events that don’t require qualification at the District Level. Ag. Communications, Livestock Judging, and Meats are only a few. Ask your advisors about the other CDE’s that you can compete in so that you can develop your skills are a member!

Advanced Leadership Development

// March 2009

imageThis year our ALD was held in the Columbia Basin College in Pasco, WA. We had a great turnout of members from Pullman to Fife. It was really sweet to see so many students from all around the state come to develop some advanced leadership skills. Our trainers from Nationals for this event were Aaron, Jill, and Jessica from different parts of the country taught our members different skills and abilities that they can now bring back to their chapters. They learned that leadership is influence and that it happens through us and others through service. It was really amazing to see how excited everyone was to be there. I think the best part of the entire event was how everyone was more then willing to volunteer. I can’t wait to see what comes from this, and I am excited to go to a chapter and see these skills that were taught to the members implemented in chapters. Well done everyone and keep on rocking our ALD rock stars!!!
